Youth Observatory for Tolerance in Media
The project Youth Observatory for Tolerance in Media /YO4TM/ is supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria and is funded within the framework of the Bulgarian development policy. The project will bring together 20 young people and media educators from 5 countries with priority in regards to the Bulgarian development policy (the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, the Republic of Serbia, the Republic of Albania, the Republic of Armenia and Georgia) in Sofia for a workshop between 20 and 24 September. Due to financial restrictions, Republic of Armenia and Georgia will have only one representative from their national United Nations Association and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Albania will have 4 youth representatives of their national associations.
The organisers cover the road, accommodation and food tolls and will help in the process of obtaining visas for Bulgaria.
What is our goal?
A principal purpose of the project is to contribute to the implementation of the global UN initiative “Alliance of Civilizations” and more specifically to fulfill the aims in the area of media.
The specific tasks are:
1. To prepare teams from the partnering countries for media monitoring against hate speech and intolerance;
2. To examine mindsets and existing practices for increasing the media literacy of young people inhabiting the participating countries; (тук не е ли по-добре partner countries)
3. To develop a sustainable network for partnership between the youth organisations of the United Nations Associations.
During the preparation for the workshop, the applicants will be consulted in order to examine expectations and mindsets regarding the conduct of the workshop and the implementation of the project. On this basis, the methodology for carrying out training sessions and a concept of the youth media observatory will be created.
What to expect?
During the workshop, the creation of a Youth Observatory will be announced in the media. Also, a discussion will take place in order to decide the day in which monitoring the leading medias of the participating countries will take place. The presentation of minority groups and the multicultural society in leading newspapers and TV channels will be examined. A symbolic date for the monitoring could be 24 October, United Nations Day. Following analyses and publications of results are going to require the partnership of journalism faculties in the participating countries.
